Each year, an abundance of Pacific Herring (Clupea pallasii) arrives in San Francisco Bay. During this annual event, my family would eagerly search for this elusive fish. Equipped with hand-thrown Cast Nets, we would drive the shoreline and scan the water for telltale signs that a spawn might be occurring, usually indicated by diving birds and frolicking Sea Lions. Usually, we went home empty handed. Some years we didn’t catch a single fish. Other years, we were lucky enough to have a feast and celebrate the harvest with friends and neighbors.
Before San Francisco Herring Company opened for business, Pacific Herring was rarely available in any market, grocery store, or restaurant in the Bay Area. We are working hard to change that.
Now, equipped with our own 1939 Commercial Fishing Vessel, we are able to be on the water every day of the Herring Season to ensure that you and your family will not go empty handed. We look forward to sharing the bounty with you.
